How To Add PUNCH To Your DRUMS

Have you ever been in a situation where your drum mix was lacking definition and punch? Or maybe lost in your mix? When mixing a song with a lot of tracks, it is easy at some point to lose some important elements. That can easily happen in a busy rock or pop mix. This is something I struggled with in the past.

The best solution to fix this problem is a good balance to start with. Once the balance is right, there’s a lot of different options you can use to add punch to you drum sound. Let me share one of them with you. Shaping the transients of your sound using a Transient Designer. This tool is a very good way to add punch and definition to a kick, a snare, toms and even the entire drum bus.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to work a kick and snare with the Envelope Shaper included in Cubase 9.
Then, I will work on the drums bus using the Multiband Envelope Shaper which is a pretty powerful tool. If Cubase is not your DAW, no worries, you can apply this technique with all Transient Designer plugins out there if one of them is not included in your DAW.

Hope you enjoy!
