How to Create VOCAL DELAY THROWS like a PRO

Vocal delay throws are a very common thing in modern Pop, Rock and EDM music. They can add some depth in a mix by emphasizing specific words, lines or phrases of a vocal recording. In this video, I show you how I create Vocal Delay Throws to get the best results with a lot of control over that very nice mixing effect.

Here is a good article on this topic from my good friend Tosho at Mixing Tips.

  1. I don’t understand why this gives you more control than using a send. When I use a send I can mute the send and then control the level on the FX track. Seems a lot more work this way as I’ve got to cut out all the bits I want the delay on? Maybe I’m missing something? Thanks, all the best. Nic

    1. Good question, to start with, Send automation will give you the same effect, so all roads leads to Rome 😉 (Using Sends Automation was part of a video I did a couple of years ago.)
The rest is a matter of workflow that works better for me. For me it’s faster to copy/paste on my Delay track what I need to add delay on instead of writing down Sends automation.
I also have a clear visual on what I add on this track and I have more control on the tone of what I’m adding delay on. Like in my example, my vocal copy is unprocessed compare to the original, this is what I wanted.
In the end, it’s a personal preference, no big deal. It doesn’t matter what technique you use as far as it works well for you. I should’ve explain that better in the video though.
