MIX YOUR VOCALS - How to use volume AUTOMATION

If you want to mix your vocals like a pro, this one is for you. In this “MIX YOUR VOCALS” series, I will show you all the steps I take when mixing a vocal. This will be a 6 part video series and on this first video, I will talk to you about the importance of VOLUME AUTOMATION.

I use automation a lot in a mix and when it comes to vocals, I like to start my mix with some volume AUTOMATION to balance my vocal out before I reach my first compressor.

Hope you enjoy!

As always, please subscribe to my Youtube channel if you like what you see; let’s get these helpful tips out there so better mixes are made!

Cheers,

Here is a good article on this topic from my good friend Tosho at Mixing Tips.

  1. Great video, don’t know how I’ve missed out automating on the pregain, I’ve been trying to do it in the event itself but the editing possibilities there are a bit limited in cubase. Do you have any rule of thumb when to use clip gain or when it’s better to use pregain.
Watching all your videos and looking forward to the next one!

    1. Thanks for watching Staffan,

To answer your question, I mainly Clip Gain for the rough parts then use Vocal Rider for smoother automation. Vocal Rider will do the same as Pr-Gain but automatically which is nice.
I got it at $29 on a Waves sale…they do this all the time, you just have to check once in a while until the plugin of your choice gets on sale (small tip).

  2. Bon jour Chris! This is so informative – merci! Two questions: will you be doing a video on using automation other than volume on ranges. For example, I want to add reverb on a chorus part only. There must be an easier way than copying the track then cutting it up for the chorus… Also, do you know if there is a way to use a guitar as a midi controller? I’m pretty good stringed instruments only if there’s a neck – my piano chops suck…

    1. Hey Birks,

Yes, I will cover a few automation ideas when working with Fx like Reverb and Delay in the next few vids. Now for Guitar as a MIDI controller, I never worked with something like this but check these 2 links, that might help! 🙂
